Darien is a small town on Connecticut’s Gold Coast with an amazing downtown. Downtown Darien has been reimagined by the Corbin District project, making it more walkable and adding a central community center for town gatherings. The project has attracted some of the country’s finest retailers, restaurant tours, and service companies. 

This coastal town has two public beaches along with multiple parks and three private country clubs. Darien also boasts one of the best-ranked school districts in the United States. Darien is ideal for commuters, with NYC just one hour away via two railway stations or driving.

People & Lifestyle

Darien’s many prominent residents include television news anchors, superstar actors, venture capitalists, and C-level executives. The town has a population of around 20,000, and about a third of Darien’s residents commute into NYC for work. The town’s outstanding schools have made it a popular choice for young families, and Darien has the youngest average age of any non-college town in Connecticut. Many of those who live in the town belong to local organizations such as Darien’s prestigious country clubs, the Tokeneke Beach Club, and Norton Yacht Club.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Launched in 2019, the Corbin District project has transformed Darien’s seven-acre downtown district with the addition of high-end boutiques, first-class dining destinations, luxury residential units, and beautifully designed public spaces for farmers markets, outdoor concerts, and other community events. Ten Twenty Post is an upscale bistro and oyster bar with a menu of New England seafood specialties and elegant French-American fusion cuisine. Bodega Taco Bar offers inventive tacos and other tasty Mexican eats alongside an extensive selection of tequilas and cocktails. 

Neat Coffee and Espresso Bar is your downtown Darien go-to for artisanal beverages prepared with skill and attention to detail. Flour Water Salt Bread sells delicious sourdough loaves and baguettes alongside scrumptious baked goods and New York-style cinnamon coffee cake. Darien Sport Shop is stocked with sports equipment and apparel for all ages from premium brands such as Alo, Lululemon, and Rhone. Darien Library is a wonderful community resource that hosts many special events for children, teenagers, and adults.

Things to Do

Weed Beach is a 22-acre recreation destination with a sandy swimming beach plus tennis courts, play areas, and a fitness trail. Eight-acre Pear Tree Point Beach at the mouth of the Goodwives River is one of the most attractive sandy swimming beaches in Fairfax County. Pear Tree Point Beach features a gazebo overlooking the Long Island Sound plus a boat launch ramp, picnic tables, and grills. Local organizations based at Darien’s beaches include the Darien Boat Club at Pear Tree Point Beach and Darien Junior Sailing Team at Weed Beach. 

Cherry Lawn Park extends over 27.5 acres with amenities including a community garden, basketball court, softball and multi-purpose sports fields, four tennis courts, and a playground area with swings, slides, and playscapes. Cherry Lawn Park is also home to the Darien Nature Center, which has two miles of trails running through seven distinct ecosystems, including woodlands, ponds, marshes, streams, and prairies. A variety of programs are held at Darien Nature Center, including pre-school groups and summer camps. 8.6-acre Tilley Pond Park is a gorgeous greenspace featuring an ornamental garden, walking and jogging paths, a stone hut with a fireplace, and a scenic pond. 

Founded in 1896, Wee Burn County Club is one of the oldest private country clubs in Connecticut. This prestigious institution offers its members access to a beautiful Mediterranean clubhouse and a championship golf course designed by Devereux Emmet. The Country Club of Darien’s exceptional amenities includes eight Har-Tru tennis courts and four platform tennis courts for winter play. The club’s award-winning 18-hole golf course was originally designed by Devereux Emmet partner Alfred Tull and then modernized in 2007 by Dr. Michael Hudzan. The clubhouse features two upscale dining spaces, a fitness center, and a swimming facility, including a six-lane adult pool and a gated baby pool. Woodway Country Club has an 18-hole championship course designed by Willie Park Jr., plus refined dining areas and a pool and tennis complex with ten Har-Tru clay courts.
