North Salem is located only a few minutes from the New York-Connecticut border and about an hour from New Haven. North Salem is known for being horse country, inviting residents to take up riding and equestrian lessons. The small town is also surrounded by preserves and reservations, making it a great place for those who want to feel immersed in nature.

Local Lifestyle

Life in North Salem is centered around horses, fine dining, and ample time outside. It’s a quiet, private town with just over 5,000 people, allowing its residents to slow down and enjoy the little things. 

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

For groceries and other necessities, North Salem has The Market in North Salem and The Market at Union Hall. Green Way Markets of Cross River is another option, or Danbury Fair, one of the largest shopping centers in New England, is only 15 minutes away. With more than 180 stores to choose from, including the Apple Store and Dick’s Sporting Goods, Danbury Fair is a true treasure for residents of North Salem.

One Twenty One is truly a taste of decadence and luxury in North Salem, with menu items like Duck Breast with Cherries and Edamame, a Scotch Egg with Potato Souffle, and Tuna Tartar with Wasabi Vinaigrette. Rraci’s Restaurant is a great date night location, combining handcrafted menu items with an array of ports, cognacs, beers, and cocktails. For those in the mood for seafood, Purdy’s Farmer & The Fish is a local favorite.

North Salem is only a 15-minute drive from Ridgefield, where live music, comedy, and theater performances take place at the Ridgefield Playhouse. Residents also have access to the Caramoor, where multiple venues house concerts in styles ranging from classical to African Rock. In addition to live performances, the Caramoor offers educational field trips, music classes, and mentorship programs.

Things to Do

Residents of North Salem love to get active outdoors, with numerous hiking and walking trails through the surrounding preserves. For a fun autumn outing, apple picking happens at the Outhouse Orchards or the Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard. At Outhouse Orchards, visitors can take a walk up to the Croton Falls, and Harvest Moon hosts an annual Easter Egg hunt along with other community-wide activities throughout the year.  

Residents can visit the Hammond Museum, too, which brings together the cultures of the East and West and is home to the Japanese Stroll Garden. The museum hosts music, dance, and live theater performances. They also hold film nights, lecture series, and other educational programs. School field trips are welcome, or individuals can take walking tours of the grounds.

North Salem is also home to the Salem Golf Club, a private course and recreation center. Members gain access to the club’s lap pool and cafe, in addition to their 18-hole course. The club’s ballroom is available for special events to both members and the general public.

For the best hikes in North Salem, try the Bailey Mountain Preserve, a more leisurely 3.3-mile trek south of town. Or, spend a summer afternoon at the Titicus Reservoir or bring the whole family to Peach Lake’s Lakeside Field Club. North Salem also has a handful of horse farms available. Summit Farm offers lessons, trail rides, and boarding, while Vail Farm on Peach Lake Road is a great facility for bridle trails and therapeutic riding programs.
